Your golden victory is to conquer yourself
A friend of mine who plays golf regularly said that one of his traits is to try to control, and direct everyone and everything around him. On reflection, he saw the difficulty of this fetish to control, as he was not even able to control a small golf ball. At each hole on the golf course, he could not sink the ball in the number of strokes he desired.
Then there is the story of the man who was reflecting on his dying bed. As a young man in his 20’s he tried to integrate the Caribbean People and he failed. In his 30’s he tried to change the people of Trinidad and Tobago to be more National conscious, and he failed. In his 50’s he tried to change his immediate community; he failed. In his 60’s he tried to change his family to become well knitted and thereby impact other families. He failed.
Now in his 70’s, on his dying bed he understood that the only thing he really had control over was himself. He could conquer his fears, foibles and failures. If he conquered himself, he would be the model that would lead others to conquer themselves. The golden victory is thus to conquer your own self. Reflect, and act to conquer yourself. That is, do all in your power to release the uniqueness that you have to offer the world.
